Home schooling regulations - Tutor Hunt Blog
Home schooling regulations Home schooling ? regulations may soon be tightened Home schooling ? regulations may soon be tightenedSchoolsHome schooling, or home education as it is actually termed in the UK, simply means a child receives all their education at home, either from tutors or (more likely) parents/carers. The choice to provide home education rests with the parents or guardians - no school can mandate that a child be educated at home, nor can the child themselves insist they do. The headteacher of the school does have the power to prevent a child being home educated, but this is a rare occurrence; the most likely scenario for a school refusing to cooperate is when the parents wish for their child to attend some classes at school, while receiving the majority of their education at home. Section 7 of The Education Act of 1996 lays down a number of clear points regarding the parent/carer`s legal responsibility should they choose to home school their child, along with some helpful guidelines: Parents are not required to be qualified teachers. While their child is not required to strictly adhere to the national curriculum, or take standardised tests, the parent/carers are required by law to ensure their child receives `full-time education suitable to their age, ability and aptitude and to any special educational needs your child may have.`Permission isn`t required from the school or education authority, but these institutions must be informed that the child will be homeschooled.Regular school hours, along with holidays and term times do not have to be adhered to.Fixed timetables are not needed, nor are formal lessons (which start at a certain time, and are of a certain duration) mandatory. There will be no funds provided for parents/carers who choose to provide home education for their child. The local EA (education authority) may be able to provide learning material and guidance throughout the year, and may also visit annually to check your child`s progress and offer advice. Before conducting research for this article I believed that obtaining permission for your child to be homeschooled was an extremely difficult process, and one that was very likely to be vetoed by your school or education authority. In fact any parent or carer can request that their child be homeschooled, and it is incredibly unlikely that permission will be refused. I also believed that home educated children were mandated to adhere to the national curriculum, and were likewise obliged to take the same exams as their school educated peers. This is apparently not the case - as the second bullet point above shows. One of the most common reasons for a child to be home educated is because of bullying at school. The only home educated child amongst my peer group had indeed been taken out of the school system because of excessive bullying, which teachers had done little to attenuate, much to the chagrin of his parents, who decided that he would learn more (and be safer) at home. Another demographic of home educated children are those with special needs: children with autism or ADHD may find they are not receiving the specific help they need at school, and their parents may decide that teaching them at home is the best option. Support for children with special needs has long been a problem, and it was announced by the government earlier this year that 215 million would be allocated to address this issue. The incidence of children with special needs being home educated is rising: over the last five years the numbers have grown by an astonishing 57% across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In England the rise has been highest, with numbers up 64% compared to half a decade ago. A germane piece of news is that the government plans to impose stricter guidelines on home educated children. Only last week (24th November) school system minister Lord Agnew, speaking in the House of Lords, said that the Department for Education would be strengthening the guidance on local authorities and parents. The Department for Education has said this guidance will `help parents understand their responsibilities in delivering home education and make sure local authorities are clear on the action they can take`. This potentially drastic shake up of the home schooling system may have precipitated out of the Birmingham `trojan horse scandal.` Colin Diamond, head of education at Birmingham City Council, has expressed concern about children being isolated from their peer group: `The biggest risks in terms of exposure to any form of non-mainstream societal values is... if you are at home, because you are not part of the social group`. The government will soon be publishing a draft paper, outlining any changes to the home schooling system. It may include regular compulsory visits by education officials, and the insistence that children adhere to the national curriculum, and participate in the assessments and coursework, as they would if they were being educated at school. 2 years ago0Add a Comment

How mans best friend can help improve your health
How man's best friend can help improve your health Image provided by Unsplash.com Pets for Vets employee Liza Hess understands the importance of the relationship a dog can have with its owner. Pets for Vets is an organization that helps build a bond between U.S. Veterans and troubled dogs. According to the site, dogs are rescued by the organization, given basic training, then provided to a new home after assessing what a veteran need. As many as 20% of returning veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Through the organizationâs Super Bond program, veterans and dogs get a second chance at life. Introducing a dog to a veteranâs life can help them strengthen social connections, increase mental health, boost confidence and self-esteem and overcome trauma, according to USA Today. Andrew Peters, a former U.S Army Medic (68w), has helped other veterans feel their best for years. His dog, Teegan, has helped him for the past three. In many ways, they have helped each other. âTeegan was the last of her litter, was sick, eyes swollen shut, a small chunk of skin missing on her forehead, and a distended belly when we saw her,â Peters said. Peters does not suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, but Teegan has brought a sense of comfort to his life. âFor me, having a dog mitigates a lot of lifeâs little stresses,â Peters said. âTeegan looks at me completely not understanding what is wrong, only that something is wrong and wants me to feel better,â Peters said. For anyone, owning a dog has several other health benefits. Research shows that dogs can improve heart health, help maintain an active lifestyle and detect diseases. Before getting a dog, one should consider how much time they can invest in the relationship with their potential pet because dogs need people just as much as people need them.

6 Ways To Navigate an Open Office As An Introvert - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / 6 Ways To Navigate an Open Office As An Introvert - Introvert Whisperer 6 Ways To Navigate an Open Office As An Introvert If youâre an introvert, operating in an open office is probably more exhausting than the work itself. While open offices have valid reasons for redesigning the workspace, such as reducing the real estate footprint and facilitating collaboration, many introverts wonder what kind of sadist concocted the layout, gleefully corralling his employees into a single room so he could torture them with the three same mixtapes he made for that rodeo once in high school. When I first walked into my current work environment, I was warily excited this was a completely new atmosphere for me after all, and I thought it would be a good to experience the new, trendy âbig cool tech companyâ vibe being pitched to me. However, a year later Iâve come to realize the physiological impacts of our office surroundings that many of my coworkers donât quite understand, and so I rolled up my sleeves and sought to solve these problems on my own. Since there was no way I could drop in on a weekend with a haul from Home Depot and build myself a tidy little enclosure, I managed to work out a few ways to not only cope, but even enjoy my work in this new, wild environment. 1. Devise a way to show that youâre busy. You donât need a giant stoplight hanging off the side of your desk to let your employees know that youâre unavailable for socializing. Simple things like wearing headphones (if your office allows them), or even a small sign resting at the top of your computer monitor reading âBusy Right Now.â The headphones are typically the better option, since they also serve as a way to block out the inevitable noise of a crowd of people fenced into a concrete cage together. Research suggests that background noise distracts introverts many times more than extroverts, and reducing that noise is essential to productivity. 2. Take time to recharge alone. Perhaps the most obvious, but easily overlooked tip. Short breaks throughout the day can help you handle the snowballing effect of stress that can come with the pressure to socialize with coworkers. I made it a habit to take two short walks outside the office twice a day to get away from the noise, but perhaps even taking a few minutes to lie down in your car or read a book a few times a week can relieve that pressure. 3. Note the quiet times in the office. An open office means being available to your colleagues at nearly all times of the day. After a couple of weeks however, youâll likely notice a pattern of activity that you can take advantage of. Note these times to schedule your more difficult tasks to take advantage of the extra breathing room. 4. Find a way to make your desk more private. There is little to no privacy in an open office. A 2013 study reported that many workers within open offices were frustrated by distractions and the poor performance that resulted. Nearly half of those surveyed noted the lack of sound privacy was a serious problem, and more than 30% objected to the lack of visual privacy. Consider asking to have your desk moved to a wall, or perhaps insulate your space with plants or other barriers. 5. Book a conference room to work alone. If there are meeting rooms not being used, why not book one for a âmeeting with yourselfâ to take advantage of the quiet space it provides. If you have a particularly intensive task at hand, or when the open space environment becomes too much to handle, this option can be a valuable fix. Even relocating to the smaller rooms for more semi-private collaboration with a colleague can be much less taxing, and allow you to communicate in a way that is more conducive to your style and get work done without unpleasant interruptions. 6. Get support from your boss. Yeah, I know, trying to explain to your boss that you need quiet and calm to do your best work feels like youâre admitting that youâre not meeting expectations. More often than not however, your boss is on your side. If you have to, present your boss with the facts. In one study of 42,000 workers in 303 office buildings, all types of employees noted that enclosed private offices are superior to open-plan layouts âparticularly in acoustics, privacy, and proxemics issues.â Bottom line: you donât have to be aggressive or stage any sort of protest to overcome the stress that comes with the open-office. You can carve out your own pockets of time or space to breath and perhaps even enjoy your work again. Power-Influence-Office Politics: it comes down to your Strategic Relationships and understanding of how you build each one of these elements. Why Students Are Choosing Online High Schools
Why Students Are Choosing Online High Schools Stanford is putting its name behind an online high school, the Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY). EPGY has been in existence for many years now, but Stanford will now lend its name to the high school diplomas its students recieve. More than 275,000 students across the country are currently enrolled in online high schools. Some of them soley take online classes, while others use online classes to supplement the education they receive at their local school. Many take online classes to fit their busy schedules as aspiring actors or world-class athletes. For some, an online high school is a much better alternative to the schooling offered by remote school districts. Whatever the case, the enrollment figures for online high schools are increasing yearly. In EPGY's program, students take classes via video-chats and instant messaging. A typical class has 15-20 students, and technology allows for class discussions as if everyone were in the same room. Tests are administered by EPGY approved proctors, and the program even allows for group projects. For more about the online high school trend, read this article in the New York Times.
How to Approach Transferring Schools
How to Approach Transferring Schools We all hope that well get our college decision right on the first try. Obviously, thats the ideal way to do it. Spending months agonizing over applications, personal essays, waiting for those big envelopes in the mail, and looking over every college review site out there you dont want to have to do that again. Transferring schools usually isnt in your four-year plan as you prepare for your university adventure as a freshman but it can happen, and usually when its the farthest idea from your mind. There are a number of reasons this can happen. Perhaps you werent thorough enough on your campus visit or perhaps you didnt make a visit at all. Maybe you didnt do enough research on the availability of academic opportunities you desire or the kind of town atmosphere you want. Realizing halfway through your freshman year that you are not getting the kind of experience you need is never a fun feeling, but its better to recognize and admit it at that point rather than staying in denial and getting cheated out of the college experience you deserve. Also, sometimes circumstances out of your control can come into play and drive you to transferring. Its very possible that you did do all the necessary prep-work to make an informed decision about the college you would attend, but you ended up not being comfortable with any of your peers. Different schools do attract different people and sometimes you just may not find yourself fitting in as well as you would have hoped. And that doesnt always mean youre not trying hard enough or not utilizing enough of the readily available social opportunities unfortunately, sometimes things just dont work out. Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, social aspects are a very important part of college, and how can you be happy living on your own if you do not have some sort of support system physically there by your side? A particular environment may not be right for you specifically and if you accept that and believe you are not at fault, then you will be on a healthy track to make the infamous transfer. Now, this all leads up to why transferring can be good. Its very refreshing and comforting to know you have a second chance at the awesome college experience youve dreamed of. You can start all over, meet new people, live in a new place, try new things. Plus, now that you have some of the college experience under your belt, you arent a totally blind freshman who is completely unaware of how things work. You will have some good background about college life to make sure you do it right this time. However, you cannot be nave and think acclimating to a new college in your second or third year will be as easy as going to a new college as a freshman was. Universities make the first few weeks of school a social haven for freshmen, creating orientations and events that are specifically catered to that incoming class. This time, you are not a part of that brand new group you are just a brand new individual, alone. Granted, many students transfer to schools where they already know someone, and that certainly makes the transition a lot smoother. But if you are going into this without knowing a soul, be prepared to work a little harder at breaking into the social scene and learning about the environment around you. Its so easy to get scared by this prospect and just decide to tolerate your original school. But think of it this way is it better to be miserable at a school youre safely familiar with or to nervously put forth some extra effort to get to know a new one? You deserve another chance. You deserve the best college experience you can have. Maybe transferring will make you a little uncomfortable initially, but that wont last forever whereas staying at the first school that you hated, might. Which path will leave you happiest at graduation? Thats the path you want to go on, the path that will end with no regrets.
